SURF-UH

On this page, meet students who have participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at UH under Dr. Song's sponsorship. See the UH Office of Undergraduate Research web site for more information about this fellowship.

Leif Bagge
An electrical engineering major, Leif took part in the Summer 2006 program, working alongside a graduate student in electrical engineering. Leif helped design amplifier circuits for piezoelectric materials (see "research" for more on this) and presented his research at Undergraduate Research Day in the Fall of 2006 semester.

Michael Fernandez
Majoring in mechanical engineering, Michael wanted to pursue research in a unique and rising field. During the summer of 2006, he worked with a graduate student to develop strain and displacement sensors based on fiber optic technology. The sensors, some of the smallest of their kind, were applied to simulations of structural failures and tested. Michael presented a summary of his work at Undergraduate Research Day in the Fall of 2006 and also gave a live demonstration of the sensors.
